My Poetry: I Took My Heart Out

I Took My Heart Out

I took my heart out for a walk
We wandered through the pines
Along the river banks lined
With weeping willow
And all the time
We confessed to each other
Without confessing anything at all.

I took my heart out for a dance
We dressed in matching shades
Of dark and painted
the town red to match her lips
and all the time
we held each other
without promising anything at all.

I took my heart out for a drink
We chased pints and shots
ran around like hail on plant pots
I spilt my secrets on the bar
She laughed and ordered more
And all the while
We held on to each other
Without holding on to anything at all.
